Shaping Up to China
| |
It is 6.30 on a cold Beijing morning. Hundreds of Chinese have gathered for their daily exercise in Tiantan (Temple of Heaven) Park, in what was old, "outer" Peking and is now an inner suburb. Some people perform silent, stylised sword play and tai chi. Laughing senior citizens are belting shuttlecocks to and fro. With concrete pavers for a sprung floor and cassette tapes for a band, other couples quickstep around a hall of centuries-old cypress trees.
