Acoma Pueblo is probably North America's oldest continuously inhabited place, vying for the title with Taos Pueblo, in New Mexico's northeast, and Oraibi in Arizona. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of twelfth-century occupation, but local legend pushes it back centuries. Also called Sky City, because it sits atop a rearing sandstone butte, Acoma is a natural fortress. "One of the strongest ever seen," wrote Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in 1540. "The ascent was so difficult that we repented climbing to the top."
