Number Three
Melanie Ball  in Stewart Island
Every year about five hundred visitors hike Stewart Island's ten-day North West Circuit. Fifteen hundred follow the eighteen-mile Rakiura Track through native forest to Maori hunting sites settled and abandoned by Europeans. Others come to fish, boat and hunt deer in island wilderness, or just to unwind in a town where a minibus and a battered four-wheel-drive arriving together to meet the ferry constitutes rush hour.
