Enlightenment eluded me in Thailand's Golden Triangle region, but I discovered the answer to one of life's great philosophical questions. Our guide Kai, whose name means egg, told me his sister's name, Gai, means chicken, and she came first. If only all questions were so straightforward. I still don't understand why an electrical fault plunged only our first class carriage into non-airconditioned darkness for the 13-hour train trip north from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
