Loitering in a Lava Tube

Melanie Ball
in
Queensland
To clamber down into an Undara lava tube is to enter another world. Construction of their fantastic curved and patterned stone ceilings and walls began some 190,000 years ago, when the Undara crater disgorged 22 cubic kilometres of lava. Red-hot molten rock engulfed the rainforest and followed a natural river bed, forming the longest lava flow from a single volcano anywhere on earth.
