Listening to the Dead

D
ead men usually tell no tales. But Vienna's dead speak eloquently. With few words the 2.5 million residents of the city's Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery) tell of symphonies, sculptures, poetry, politics, waltzes and wars. One of Europe's biggest cemeteries, Zentralfriedhof has a larger population than Greater Vienna and covers more area than the Innere Stadt. A half-hour tram ride from Stephenplatz brings you to a red brick wall that seems to run forever beside the tracks.
