Exploring Australia's Red Heart
Scalp, nose and ears itching, teeth crunching, I watch sand scuttle across the salt lake towards the blurred far shore and wonder what I would have penned had I been the first white person to cross Australia's Simpson Desert. Certainly nothing as humble as Edmund (Ted) Albert Colson who concluded his 1936 return crossing with the journal entry: "Though I have nothing very spectacular to offer, I think I can say, something accomplished, something done."
