Compared with the town's characterless, concrete modern half, Old Lijiang, in China's Yunnan Province, initially looks twee. The timber welcome sign, potted flowers and lanterns suggest the hand of a theme park designer. But there is nothing fake about the historic town into which the flagstoned streets lead. They bring you - directly or more circuitously - to a market square that has been the centre of life for the Naxi people for hundreds of years.
